Two nights 12 and 13 June 2024. This is convenient location to explore Ottawa. It is a 2 mile walk to downtown or Uber/Lyft. The finger piers fit boats up to 35 feet with a pier length of 15 feet. Waist tie is at the head of the finger pier. The marina offers diesel and pump out; however, it is next to a launch ramp where at their corner is 40" water depth. Under the adjacent Pavillion with restaurants are the restroom/showers and laundry.

Merrickville. 6/9/2024 and 6/10/2024 due to weather. The wall dock has two electrical service pedestals and finger pier has five service pedestals. Road noise detracts from the quiet. The Parks Canada lock office to pay for power ($10.75 CAN/day) is located across the bridge down the stairs in the white building which also has the washrooms. The campground offers showers to boaters at a price of ($5 CAN). Easy walk into town with many eateries, coffees, and other shops. Enroute from Smiths Falls, buoy N369 appears to be missing. Recommend a good review of the chart prior arrival at the Parks Canada "lock marina" which is accessed from the canal via a separate channel. From the junction buoy to the lock marina, channel buoys are green-left and red-right.

Victoria Park Marina at Smiths Falls. 6/8/2024 one overnight. Convenient about halfway between Lock 29a and 31 in the Smith Falls basin and west of Le Boat. Two overnight options are available; 1) north bank is Parks Canada which honors purchased permits, 2) south bank is Victoria Park Marina which requires a slip fee ($2.06 CAN/foot) to use the floating (good condition) finger piers. The latter option is convenient to the washroom whereas the former option requires a walk across the swing bridge. The washroom facility, maintained by Smiths Falls, is dilapidated. The women's restroom is out of order. The men's restroom had one of two toilets working, one of two showers working, but only cold water (a maintenance request for hot water is submitted). It appears the restroom lights are on a timer which operate on a limited schedule. The phone number for Victoria Park Marine (note name change from Victoria Campground and Marina Park) is 613.706.2646. WIFI is available at the marina. The two young ladies at the Visiting Center adjacent to the playground, marina management, are very helpful and have extensive local knowledge.

Newboro. 6/7/2024. Nice town and one of three hydraulic locks. Power is at the top of the lock on the north wall that can accommodate three to four boats. The wood walk and tile surface around the lock appear new. The nearby village is small and pleasant with several eateries. I patronized and recommended the Stagecoach for a meal enjoying a luxurious seating arrangement. There are no showers for transients at the lock or in the town.

Jones Falls. 6/6/2024. On the north bound route to the lock Hotel Kenny is at the forefront before turning left to the lock chambers. It offers a mooring to a wall ($2.35 CAN/foot) with power and washroom (no showers). I patronized its restaurant. There is no power at the lock (top or bottom). On the top, immediately to the right of the lock has a space for two to three boats. Additional space for boats is on the finger piers, a short distance on a water-pool above the lock. Both mooring locations may use the washroom locate between lock chamber two and three.

Lower Brewers. 6/5/2024. The manual manipulation of lock and swing bridge by lock staff is fascinating. Power is at the bottom of the lock which has a park-like atmosphere. The T-Mobile signal strength was strongest at the top of the lock by the washrooms. Enroute from Kingston buoy S114 appears to be out of position. Following this overnight and proceeding north bound to Upper Brewers the water immediately prior to the lock is shoal (water depth of 3ft) and tricky to navigate. Sackets Harbor Navy Point Marine. Three nights 6/1/2024 to 6/3/2024. The harbor is a natural harbor protected from the prevailing winds off Lake Ontario. The marina occupies the site of the abandoned Navy Yard. There are an overwhelming number of sailboats which have access to the Black River Bay and east to Lake Ontario. Facilities are in one building and consist of a restroom with showers. Vehicle and pedestrian gates offer coded access to the marina. Adjacent to the site of the Battle of 1813 of Sackets Harbor and its downtown. Downtown has numerous eateries, stores and several museums. A walk around Sackets Harbor will give the feel of history, circa 1800's, it represents. The Fargo Village market is about 1 mile walk from the marina.

A rural picturesque area that may experience higher winds than neighboring locks. The downbound approach encounters water flowing right to the dam and water flowing left to the hydroelectric plant. The noise from the rushing water of the dam is continuously loud from the blue line. The grey wall opposite the blue line is quieter and has a direct path to the washroom. If you call the number 705.742.0050 you may get the Peterbourough Recreation Services Division answering recording. Press #3 and then #2 for slip rentals. On 5/26/2024 diesel was $2.25 Canadian/liter or about $6.24 USD/gallon. The pumpout was $20.67 Canadian or about $15.09 USD. Marina offers private washroom/showers and complimentary washer/dryer. Each pier has a code operated security gate. Excellent internet service. Above the marina office is The Light House restaurant, serving Mediterranean food and having a good view of Little Lake. Located at the edge of town, a causal walk will find eateries, pubs, and other stores. I patronized the close by No Frills grocery store which was well stocked. I also patronized the Silver Bean caffe just past the grocery store located on the river walk. I recommend Peterborough Marina.

Upbound lift, according to the lock master, about halfway a whirlpool at the chamber front will develop. With some art the lock master tries to have it push the boats into the dock wall. Sometimes it works, sometimes it reverses during lift and pulls the boat away from the dock wall. Be mindful of the whirlpool and prepare for a pulling effect. I needed hands on the bow line and bow thruster to manage the effect. 5/23/2024

On the east end of the wall is the Fuel dock which is identified by a small shack. If taking on fuel, I recommend a port tie-up or if starboard tie-up, 45-degree angle approach to avoid shoal water just east of the wall and fuel dock. I encountered rapidly shoaling depth to 7 feet with a 30-degree angle and cautiously veered left into deeper water. Adjacent to the wall is the restroom facility, be sure to ask for a key to the shower room. I stayed one night.

Beware of exposed large nails midway on the fuel dock's north side; plenty of room after this hazard to dock near pumps. Northport Harbor. The diesel on 9 June was $4.999/gal. With good water on approach and in the marina, the marina has a mix of motor and sailing boats. I visited during "low season" and only two slips were available. On the day I arrived the wind seemed difficult to discern, the flag on the tallest pole was one direction and the flags on the moored boats were a different direction; I suspect the marina's location on the peninsula may complicate wind flow. There is a short walk to the small downtown where I patronized the town grocery store, Tom's. Stayed one night.

Associated with Bay Marine headquartered in Chicago, this marina is immaculate. From this marina the City of Sturgeon Bay is a moderate walk over the Maple-Oregon bridge. In Sturgeon Bay there is a no wake zone from Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Buoys 22/23 to the Bayview Bridge. The bridge operator who operates all three bridges is contacted on channel 16 (refer to signage on bridges). From the marina there is a short walk to main street via a park area with historical signage. Sandy point area has history dating to the Noc Indians nearly 5000 years ago. On my approach from the east to Little Bay via Poverty Island, I encountered a moderate breeze from NNE which generated waves of 5ft and a 2 to 4 second period in the vicinity of red buoy 4 "Corona Shaol". I confirmed with the marina staff the most reliable approach transiting the bay is to stay in the 90ft depth water "trough" on the bay's west side but mindful of the adjacent west shallows and shallow 50ft water to its east. Downtown (intersection of Main St and Liberty St) is at the center with a variety of shops and restaurants. Vermilion Public Docks (identified as pillars with blue tops and white "reserved" stencil) are on the west side of the Vermilion River across from the Ontario Lagoon has clean men and women restrooms with showers. Shoal rocky on east end of wall-dock from east most power station to east end of dock. Facility has restrooms, shower, 5- power stations with 30 amp and water. Cleats are closely spaced for mooring options. The low rating is because there is not warning of submerged rocks.

In 2021, Port Austin State Harbor is accessible by reservation, but with a smaller number of transient docks due to a previous year storm damage. Last year the harbor was provisionally open with only seawall docking and no reservations. Damage remains evident on the end of the west pier (near fuel dock) and red buoys mark location of damaged pier. The harbor area is busy including kayaks, so be mindful of these boaters especially emerging from obstructed views. On 10 July I purchased diesel at $3.25/gallon. Inside the breakwater, on approach to the harbor depth was 11 feet. Depth in the outside fairway for slips 1 – 9 was 8 feet. The bottom appears to be grassy which may cause false shoal soundings. Stay within the harbor lateral-buoys and avoid the clump of buoys marking the damaged pier adjacent to the fuel dock. Town of Port Austin is an easy walk including a hardware store, market, eateries and local emporium.

Excellent marina located in the center of Huron, OH. Diesel is available just south at Huron Yacht Club which fuel dock is adjacent to the river. On 1 July, I paid $3.50/gallon, non-member price. On approach river depth is 30 feet and was cluttered with debris from recent weather systems turning up the river. Entry to the marina is a sharp right into a small turning basin, so via channel 9, announce arrival and prepare your lines/fenders prior to entry. Fairway width appears to be 40 feet and slips are marked. On pier "H" water depth is 10.5 ft. The features that set this marina above others include; docking support; excellent WIFI; excellent restroom and shower facilities; nearby eateries, Comfort Inn and beaches; and, Market Huron .5 mi walk. This historic town displays signage to describe its notable history which began in 1809. I enjoyed the Gathering Grounds Coffee House.

The north entrance is the most convenient for arriving. On entering through the breakwater stay between the green buoy and inner breakwater, for deeper water (7ft) stay in left of channel heading for the first pier (fuel dock) and ‘no-wake’ signage. On 19 June, diesel price is $3.25/gallon, pump-out service not restored following marina renovation. Marina has new floating docks, cleats and clear slip numbers; generally, slips for bigger boats are near fuel dock (piers “D” and “C”) and slips for smaller boats (piers “B” and “A”) towards land. A bike path is available to walk the 1 mile distance to downtown that has eateries and a local grocery store. Along the bike path and in downtown are markers describing significant or historic events. Harbor Beach is a very pleasant and convenient stopover.

Lexington State Dock, 15 May. A cozy marina with water in the turning basin of 14 feet and shallows to 8 feet at the slips for smaller boats. Following the recent repair of the diesel line, diesel is available. On 15 May price of diesel is $3.21. Access to northern pier slips is by a channel bounded by breakwater and beach with 8 feet water and width of 35 feet (estimate). Fairway distance between these piers is 35 feet, so, close quarter maneuvering is essential. A close walk to downtown, located on Huron Ave has several restaurants. I patronized Jeff’s Market place, a short walking distance from the marina. Post script, no water/moisture observed in fuel filters after 4 hour transit, reference concerns with water in diesel from 2020 comments.

East Tawas State Park Harbor, 14 May. Well maintained facility which by itself is pleasant to visit. Plenty of water, generally, 14 feet. On 14 May price of diesel is $3.25. A close walk to Newman Street, downtown which has a feel similar to Mackinaw City offers significant shopping and restaurants. I patronized Klenow’s Market which has fresh butcher meat/sausage selection, a local attraction.

City of Alpena Marina, 13 May. Follow main channel to mouth of Thunder Bay River. Upon entering the river just beyond the Alpena South Breakwater Light and Alpena Light/Fog, turn left in the marina basin, water is generally 12 feet to fuel dock located on far south of marina before boat ramps. On 13 May price of diesel is $3.40. Electrical service offers 50, 30 and 20 amps. Nearest the marina is a Save-A-Lot for general shopping needs. Slightly further is shopping and restaurants. I walked the 30 minutes to Austin Brewery and was not disappointed with craft brew and menu choices.

Total of four bridges are encountered with the second bridge vertical clearance listed as 19.4 feet. Entrance to marina marked with private red and green buoys with depth initially at 11 feet then deceasing to 8.5 feet minimum. Floating docks with 20 transient slips for boat LOA up to 50’ and dock for larger pier has both 30 and 50 amp service; otherwise 30 amps. No Wi-Fi service. [Visit 31 July] Very friendly staff. Our slip was on the west most wall from marina entrance, slip numbers hard to see. Made use of some of its facilities. Bath house was very clean and includes laundry machines $1.25 per load. Sandpiper Grille facility is located at the entrance of the marina with great view. Fuel dock is at the entrance to marina which should be considered when arriving/departing. Looking forward to returning.

Entrance is marked by breakwaters which have defining red/green harbor lights. It has a minimum of 13 feet of water depth and 100 feet of width. With land on all sides and west facing breakwater, the harbor provides protection from most weather directions. The west part of the harbor is the State Park marina with floating docks arranged by A, B, C. Presenting well, notably the occasional flowers stands, services appear well maintained. Docks are kept clean with power washing, likely do to the Sea Gull inhabitants. Bring your boat’s water hose. State park grounds are well maintained which include playground, camping and grilling. Within walking distance is J.F Walleye's restaurant (currently open Thu to Sun) and local grocery store that includes bar and restaurant.

In these COVID times only the Stone Lodge and Blue Water Bar and Grille are open. We enjoyed our dinner at the latter. Within walking distance, Willis' Marketplace meets grocery and beverage needs.

Mud bottom has excellent holding, e.g., near 18 mph gusts from N to SE direction. U-shape offers visual aids for monitoring anchor state. Boat activity from nearby marinas lessens at night. Only downside is traffic noise from coastal road M-29 carries across water with N and E winds.
