  • Nav Alert comment on SC: Beaufort River, Lady's Island Bridge, Temporary Deviation - UPDATE

As a commuter, I understand automobile traffic needs and the necessity to limit bridge openings during rush hours. However, as an ICW cruiser, I also understand the need to travel from one location to another in daylight hours if possible. These reduced opening hours are too restrictive for allowing slower moving vessels to leave their anchorages or dock slips on the "other side of the bridge " or to arrive in daylight hours as they would need to leave before 6 am or pass through after 7 pm if they had a long journey either to or from the Beaufort area. It would be prudent to add at least one opening during the rush hour closure times to permit vessels that need to leave early in the morning or arrive later in the afternoon to do so.

I agree with the other reviewers that transients are treated as a nuisance. The office staff was not even friendly during our recent stay. It is obvious that where they make their money, through boat rentals, is their priority and definitely NOT cruising sailors. We were given vague docking instructions and no one was there to assist as we came in to a new dock for the first time. They also acted as if requesting a pump-out was a major inconvenience and only through due diligence did we ever receive one. The showers had no water for several hours one day and while that was out of their control, the way the office staff responded to a simple inquiry about when water might be available was with disinterest at the very least verging on disrespect. I would find another marina in this wonderful town if there are any available.

This is a beautiful anchorage. The shoreline has many trees down but there are still several excellent spots to anchor. We went to the head of the creek off the last cove to the east. There used to be a landing at a group camping site but it is now just a muddy beach with a timber to tie up on. However it is worth it to have access to the natural area and hiking paths. This is an exceptional anchorage.

Very easy anchor. Room for several boats. Shore access is limited but available at the center of the cove. In September, the birds on the shore were very noisy and many fishing boats came into the bay early in the morning.

Great location close to town. Had plenty of room off the channel. Boat traffic is moderate but speed limit minimizes the wake. Could take pet ashore at either the dock at the end of Market St. or to the left of the Hinkley Marina facility. Very friendly town.

This was a wonderful anchorage. It is very busy on the weekend but during the week, it is very quiet. The sandy point is excellent for walking the dog. It is also a relatively short dinghy ride up the river for a day trip into Cambridge. One of the best anchorages so far.

This was a beautiful anchorage. However it was after a hurricane passed off shore and the water was high so there was no beach access. Had to take dog to other side of the river to find shore access. This was a very nice anchorage and if water levels aren’t up it would be excellent.

The depths were less than charted on the east side of the bay. It was a tight anchorage with 5 other boats in the bay. The marina near the anchorage charges you to land a dinghy to take pets ashore. We took the dinghy to the town dock around the point instead. Average anchorage.

This is a beautiful anchorage and very protected. However if you need to take a pet to shore, all of the beaches belong to private estates so it is a challenge.

Nice setting but no good location to take dog to shore. Holding wasn’t as good as other anchorages nearby.
