Bridge comment on Frederick Douglass Memorial (South Capitol Street) Bridge

The new was completed in 2021 and replaced an older swing bridge that was completed in 1950 as the South Capitol Street Bridge. The fixed vertical clearance of 40 feet is the same as the vertical clearance of the old bridge in the closed position. As of December 2022, the ruins of the original 1950 pivot pier on the north side of the new bridge have only been removed to below the water. These ruins create a significant hazard in the center of the channel and are marked with pilings (some with lights). There is adequate channel width to pass on either side of the ruins.
