Long way to come but certainly worth the effort. Fort is historical and interesting to wander through. It's all self guided but you can join the ferry tour after it arrives around 10:30 AM. Park Rangers are around and can answer questions. Park fee is $15 a person. Honor system for paying. Cruising permit no longer in use. Great snorkeling around old piers. Swimming beach is crowded while ferry folks are here. There are two seaplane flights in morning and afternoon. Noisy for the few minutes they are taxiing in and out. Very quiet at night. Good wind protection. You can buy ice and snacks from onboard ferry while it is in. There is a small park gift shop. There is also a small museum. Take a flashlight while you tour the fort. Stairs are dark. And you'll be able to read the signs. Dogs are not permitted inside the fort but can go ashore. Leash required.

Park staff is very friendly and informative. Touring Fort Jefferson is a must. There is a very large flock of Magnificent Frigate Birds that nest on a small island next to Fort Jefferson - the only nesting site in the US. A special place in decent weather.
