NC: Alligator River, Alligator River Bridge, Main Channel Closure - Use Alternate Channel
- Date Reported: Jun 26, 2025
- Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
- Source: U.S. COAST GUARD SECTOR NORTH CAROLINA, MSIB 009-25
- Description:
Mariners are advised the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is conducting construction activities on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) at mile marker 84.2 for the replacement of the Alligator River Bridge during the following periods:
- June 30, 2025, at 12 a.m. through July 3, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.
- July 9, 2025, at 12 a.m. through July 12, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.
During these periods, the main navigation channel will be closed to all vessel traffic. To facilitate the passage of limited commercial and recreational traffic through this construction area, the USCG will establish a temporary alternative route as depicted below:
- Temp Buoy 12A at approximate position 35° 54.260′ N, 76° 00.384′ W
- Temp Buoy 12B at approximate position 35° 54.184′ N, 76° 00.368′ W
- Temp Buoy 12C at approximate position 35° 54.144′ N, 76° 00.409′ W
All mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution while transiting this temporary route and to operate at the minimum safe speed making approaches to the existing Alligator River Bridge. Due to the limited maneuverability and turning distance available between the temporary buoys and existing Alligator River Bridge, vessels greater than 150 feet in length overall are advised to adjust their transit plans accordingly to avoid this area during closure periods.
Commercial vessels must contact the project or the bridge tender via VHF FM Channel 13 or 16 at least 12 hours before transiting through the moveable span at the Alligator River Bridge from June 30, 2025, through July 14, 2025.
Bridge openings and non-navigation channel transit for emergency vessels can be accommodated with at least ten minutes notice. Emergency vessels will be given verbal instructions via VHF FM Channel 13 or 16 to navigate around the pile driving crane barge and anchor line. Vessels must not transit between the crane barge and the yellow anchor buoy.
If you have questions, please email the Sector North Carolina Waterways Management Division at [email protected] or contact the Sector North Carolina Command Center at (833) 732-8628.
