Be prepared to stay put for a while. Opening doesn't happen that quickly. Patience is a virtue! Make sure you arrive with plenty of slack time. Our mast is 80 feet so we made sure the bridge operator understood that we need the full height. My mate asked me a few times: "Is the bridge really up all the way?" With a confident voice, I said "Yes"

Although few people know of it and take the narrow option east of Roosevelt Island, for transient boaters headed up or down the east coast of the United States, this is by far the more interesting option. At 800 feet from the southern tip of Roosevelt, you can get an eerie picture of the skyscrapers of Manhattan looming up behind the ruins of the Smallpox Memorial Hospital. For us, the two hour notice for opening requirement was not a problem. With our 69 foot antennae, most bridges on the east coast south of Norfolk are a problem.

On 9/20 the west side of Roosevelt was closed. We were able to get bridge tender to lift the 40 ft bridge on request. 718-545-2092
