Alligator Point/Pigeon Creek

  • Lat / Lon: N 24° 31.980' / W 075° 38.450'
  • Depth: 4'-7.5'
  • Tide: 2.5'-3.75'
  • Description:

If there were more options for heavy weather on Cat Island this anchorage would probably get passed over because it is extremely tricky to use and any vessel drawing more than 4’ would be tide restricted.

The anchorage is situated on a narrow winding creek that lies between Pigeon Cay and the mainland of Cat Island that meanders in from open water for several miles. We have only surveyed the first mile, but an adventurous crew with a shallow draft can go a very long way. The creek shoals to 4’ in several places requiring intricate navigation that crisscrosses the channel to remain in the deepest water. There is very little room to go around an anchored vessel so if several vessels seek shelter, the size of the anchorage is limited by the vessel that is the furthest in. There is a very pretty beach just north of the entry to the creek.

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
