Thompson Bay

  ​​Thompson Bay is a large anchorage on the west side of Long Island and it is one of the favorite destinations of Long Island cruisers. The Bay is well protected from the NNW to SE but it is wide open from the S-NW. It is a viable candidate as a place to weather a cold front, although the south and west exposure means that there could be several hours of choppy conditions as the front approaches. Once the wind shifts into the north however conditions will settle down quickly. The Fox family, which operates Long Island Petroleum, have a solid wooden dock at the east end of the bay near the cell tower, that they make available to visiting boaters as a dinghy dock.  They request that dinghies be tied on the inside north portion of the dock, leaving the south and face dock clear for their personal vessels.  Please do not leave trash in the bins on the dock, and note that water  on the dock is not for public consumption. If you need water it may be purchased at the nearby grocery store or at Long Island Petroleum. There are clearly marked trash bins for public use on the road leading to the Queen’s Highway.
