The Monument/Hamburger Beach

  • Location: Exumas
  • Lat / Lon: N 23° 31.713' / W 075° 46.045'
  • Depth: 6'-12'
  • Tide: 2.5'-3.0'
  • Description:

There is a large stone beacon at the top of the hill overlooking the harbour. The Monument part of the name is obvious, but the hamburger part refers to the cruiser beach BBQ’s that used to take place along the beach below the monument.

The bottom is clear sand with excellent holding and there is good protection from most directions except when the winds are oriented along the axis of the harbour. When that occurs waves can build in the harbour and sweep through the anchorage, and some will find the pitching uncomfortable. For a vessel with a well set anchor and adequate scope, there should not be a problem.

The anchorage a large area ~0.50 long spread along the shoreline on either side of Monument Hill. The two limits are the shallows of Stocking Island and the Main Shipping channel into the government dock at Georgetown.

During busy periods care must be taken to ensure that your vessel does not impede the flow of traffic in the shipping channel as blocking the movement of a freighter or tanker is both dangerous and annoying for all parties, not to mention that you will be responsible for delaying the re-stocking of the local supermarkets.

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
