Soldier Cay Berry Islands
- Location: Berry Islands
- Lat / Lon: N 25° 39.974' / W 077° 45.712'
- Depth: 10 Feet
- Tide: 2.5'-3.0'
- Description:
The waters on the bank side of Soldier Cay are relatively deep and it is possible to find 7’ of water over sand within 200’ of the beach. While it is tempting to anchor in close for the best protection, an ocean swell is forced between the islands in easterly winds above 15 kts, making the waters close to shore more turbulent than expected.
Bahamian fishermen who often spend the night in the area tend to anchor farther from shore to avoid the worst of the swells. It seems counterintuitive to find better shelter farther away from the beach, but when in Rome….The entire area is sand, which offers good holding so the best strategy is to anchor between 0.25 and 0.50 nm off the beach for the best night’s sleep.
DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
